Yes, big brother is watching you on the street — althoughnot in the way you might think.

Federal Way’s Safe City initiative was launched in 2009 to helpdecrease criminal activities within city limits, and to date, the city has 200cameras as part of the program.

According to Michelle Roy, civilian crime analyst for theFederal Way Police Department, it is difficult to track whether the camerashave decreased crime in the city. She said there have been several instances ofthe cameras assisting police with ongoing investigations.

Investigators then checked video from security cameras athomes and businesses in the Twin Lakes neighborhood, and detectives were ableto positively identify the suspect's vehicle from multiple surveillance videorecordings.

Police say that video evidence was the key.

"We were able to locate a vehicle on those cameras and then narrowingit down back into the residents. Using surveillance from neighbors is whathelped us put the vehicle right in that general vicinity at the time,"said Schwan.

Walker likes that the police were able to use city surveillance cameras tohelp track down the suspect.

"I think that's awesome and they should have them everywhere,"she said.

Federal Way launched its Safe City Camera program in 2009.
